I guess so. It doesn't really make sense because I drove a car with nearly 2 and half times the power with 12 year old cheapo radials for nearly 3 years and didn't have any problems.

No, he wasn't. Trust me. Hardly any contact to the ground, out of alignment, and shoddy suspension + no weight to hold it down can make things interesting.
